ASTIGMATISM

WHAT IS ASTIGMATISM?

Astigmatism is a common problem that causes blurred vision to some degree at all distances, not just near or far.

Astigmatism is not an eye health problem but a problem with how the eye focuses light.

It occurs when the surface of your eye (cornea) is irregularly shaped or due to an abnormal curvature of the lens.

If your cornea or lens is unevenly curved, light entering the eye is not correctly focused on the retina. Instead, multiple focal points occur resulting in an unclear image.

CAUSES OF ASTIGMATISM

Astigmatism can affect both children and adults.  It is usually present at birth but can also occur after an eye injury or eye surgery.

Most people have some degree of astigmatism.

Many times, slight astigmatism does not affect vision or require correction.

Astigmatism symptoms may include:
  • blurry vision or areas of distorted vision
