SENIOR ADULT EYE EXAMS at FOCAL POINTE EYE CARE

As we age, eye exams become even more important. Unlike a hip or a knee, your eyes cannot be replaced.

Many eye diseases don’t cause symptoms until they are advanced enough to cause permanent problems. Diagnosing problems early is your best chance to safeguard your vision.

Eye exams can also uncover underlying health issues that become more common with age, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A SENIOR ADULT EYE EXAM

After reviewing your personal and family history, your doctor will check for:

Vision - Vision changes with age. An annual checkup will help determine a prescription for corrective lenses if necessary.

Peripheral(side) vision - Coordination of eye muscles, pupil’s response to light and overall eyelid health and function will be checked.

The interior and back of the eye - After dilating your eyes with drops, the doctor will use an instrument called an ophthalmoscope to examine the retina and optic nerve at the back of your eye. Many eye diseases first appear here.

Measurement of fluid pressure with the eye -This can be an indicator of glaucoma or other eye diseases.

SOME THINGS YOUR DOCTOR WILL LOOK FOR IN A SENIOR EYE EXAM

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
This is the leading cause of blindness among seniors. Early detection and treatment can slow its progress.

Cataracts-
Cataracts are an almost unavoidable part of aging. As we age, the lens in the eye can become cloudy. This is a cataract. While surgery is very successful in restoring vision, and updated eyewear prescription can often delay the need for surgery.

Glaucoma-
Glaucoma often goes unnoticed. Over time, it can take away peripheral (side) vision. It is cause by too much pressure in the eye but, when detected and treated early, vision loss can be prevented.

Diabetic retinopathy-
In diabetics, tiny blood vessels that supply the retina can become damaged and allow fluid to seep into the eye. Treatment includes diet and exercise and, in some cases, surgery.
