HAVING DIFFICULTY SEEING OBJECTS CLOSE TO YOU?

You may have a condition called Hyperopia or Farsightedness.

WHAT IS HYPEROPIA?

Farsightedness (hyperopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects up close may be blurry.

Hyperopia can affect people of all ages and is usually present at birth.

When you’re farsighted, your eyes don’t focus light rays the way they should because your eye is shorter than normal, your cornea is curved too little or the power to focus is too weak.

SYMPTOMS OF FARSIGHTEDNESS

  • Blurry vision
  • Eye strain
  • Fatigue or headache after you do a close-up task such as reading, writing, computer work or drawing
  • Trouble focusing on nearby objects
  • You need to squint to see clearly
  • Aching or burning eyes

HYPEROPIA OR PRESBYOPIA?

The symptoms of farsightedness and presbyopia are similar, but the cause is different.

Presbyopia is the normal loss of near focusing ability that occurs with age. Many people begin to notice the effects of presbyopia sometime after age 40 when they start having trouble seeing small print clearly.

It has also been nicknamed “long-arm sight” because people begin to hold objects and reading materials farther away to see them more clearly.

Unlike farsightedness, which is related to the shape of the eye, presbyopia happens as the natural lens naturally starts to lose flexibility. With less elasticity, the eye has a harder time focusing up close.

PRESBYOPIA SYMPTOMS

  • Headaches or eye strain when doing things that require near vision
  • Having difficulty reading small print
  • Needing brighter lighting when reading or doing close work
  • Needing to hold reading material at an arm’s distance to focus properly on it
  • Squinting
