MISIGHT LENSES

WHAT ARE  MISIGHT LENSES?

Historically when a child was diagnosed as nearsighted, the solution was to prescribe a pair of glasses to correct their vision. If the child’s myopia worsened, the prescription would change, and new glasses would be ordered. While this solution certainly helped the child see clearly, it wasn’t doing anything to treat the underlying cause of the worsening myopia. The FDA approved MiSight contact lenses are the first of their kind. They are clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia when initially prescribed for children 8-12 years old.  The are unique in that they provide vision correction, AND they also address the underlying cause of progressive myopia.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR MISIGHT LENSES?

MiSight contact lenses are specifically designed for children as a method to manage myopia (nearsightedness). Here are the typical criteria for candidates:

  • Age Group: MiSight lenses are generally recommended for children between the ages of 8 and 12 at the onset of treatment. This age range is considered ideal because it is a crucial period for eye growth, and interventions can be more effective.
  • Myopia Level: These lenses are suitable for children who have a mild to moderate level of myopia.
  • Progression of Myopia: MiSight lenses are particularly useful for children whose myopia is progressively worsening. This is a common scenario as myopia can often worsen during childhood and adolescence.

HOW DO MISIGHT LENSES SLOW MYOPIA PROGRESSION?

Myopia happens when the eyeball gets too long. This elongated shape prevents light rays from hitting the retina correctly. Through their design, MiSight lenses slow the elongation of the eye and correct refractive errors.

MiSight contact lenses work by focusing light in front of the retina rather than behind it. They have two treatment zones that create myopic defocus, slowing eyeball elongation. The center of the lens does vision correction. The outer alternating rings are for control of myopia and correction of vision.

Clinical studies show that MiSight lenses slowed myopia progression by an average of 59% over three years. These modifications in eye development can have significant long-term advantages, including potentially reducing the need for stronger prescriptions.  More importantly, they decrease the risks associated with severe or high myopia which is often associated with a higher risk of ocular health issues later in life.

Starting treatment early in the myopic progression can be more effective, making MiSight lenses an excellent choice for young children who have just started to develop myopia.
